Generation of magnetic fields beyond 100T using a single turn coil coupled to a rapid (low inductance) generator (capacitor bank). Typical pulse durations are a few microseconds, sufficiently fast so as to reach maximum magnetic field before the coil explodes outwards. This is a semi-destructive technique since the cryostat and sample (generally) survive.

Abstract

The goal of this project is to develop a new and unique experimental technique which will allow performing spectrally resolved spectroscopy at extremely high magnetic field well beyond 100T in the Megagauss facility of the Toulouse National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. This approach is based on the use of supercontinuum light sources of extremely short temporal duration, which will enable us to strobe the optical transmission of a sample at the desired value of magnetic field. Depending upon the single turn coil diameter used fields in the 150-200T range can be achieved. We will apply this technique to the measurements of magneto transmission of novel methyammonium (MA) tin triiodide, a perovskite semiconductor which has a bandgap in the near infrared (1.22 eV) to determine accurately its exciton binding energy and reduced mass. These measurements will be complemented by standard magneto transmission measurements performed in long-pulse magnets. Perovskites are a rapidly emerging family of semiconductors with photo voltaic (solar cell) applications due to their high (>20%) efficiency, ease of fabrication and low cost.
