Schematic; in a): interference substrate (1), incident beam (2), reflected beam (3), diffracted wave from nanoparticle (4), optical probe (5), standing wave parallel to surface (6) formed by incident and reflected beam; in b): second incident beam (7), vertical standing wave (8) formed by the two incident beams.
OLINOS will develop coherent diffraction imaging of nanoparticles on surfaces and at the proximity of the surface in polymers to increase lateral resolution. By recording optical images using a scanning optical fiber in the proximity of an interference substrate high lateral resolution is expected. This is achieved by the use of ptychograpic recording and iterative phase retrieval to reconstruct the image. The project’s main impact is in the development a new and versatile lensless optical imaging technique suitable for single nanoparticles as well as nanoparticles in a matrix for a wide variety of applications. Carbon nanoparticles such as nanotubes or graphene dispersed in a polymer matrix will be imaged to better understand the dispersion of nanoparticles. The project explores the optical field from nanoparticles on surfaces ranging from the near to the far field and aims to understand light emission from nanoparticles. This fundamental understanding will pave the way to developing appropriate methodology to increase the optical resolution so as to track nanoparticles on surfaces and in dielectric matrices.
