Diffraction of an electron matter wave on a standing light wave

Abstract

Generating ultrashort pulses of light or matter waves requires to coherently manipulate a broad spectrum of frequency or wavevectors both in amplitude and phase. Pulse shaping and characterization techniques are very advanced for femtosecond and attosecond pulses of light. For matter waves, the current development of ultrafast electron microscopes demands new strategies for the generation, manipulation and characterization of subpicosecond electron pulses. In this context, the MUSE project (coherent Manipulation of UltraShort Electron pulses) aims at improving our laser-induced electron source with the development of a state-of-the-art Non-Collinear Optical Parametric Amplifier and exploring two complementary approaches to manipulate ultrashort electron packets: Kapitza-Dirac diffraction of electrons on multicolor standing light waves and Electron Energy Gain Spectroscopy in an ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscope.
