IR imaging of the local temperature raise of two NiFe microarrays (single layer and bilayer) submitted to a 1.23 GHz / 10 A/m microwave excitation.

Abstract

Our project is to study the heating phenomena related to losses in nanoscaled ferromagnetic (FM) materials (thin films or nanoparticles), in particular, their measure by either infrared or visible light detection. Two methods will be implemented: i) the existing infrared (IR) thermography setup developed at ONERA for the direct observation of microwave magnetic field. ii) a new innovative method using thermosensitive fluorescent molecules grafted on MDPL (magnetic devices presenting losses). Two MDPLs will be tested: i) high permeability arrays of FM microelements already developed at CEMES/ONERA ii) self-assembled monolayers of magnetic nanoparticles synthesized at the LPCNO. The combination of IR and visible detection will allow both large scale (IR) and microscopic imaging of magnetic losses. At the end, the combination of the two methods will allow us to study thermal transfer at the nanoscale, a topic on which a series of puzzling results have been already measured in our laboratories and in the literature and could have important consequences in nanomedecine and catalysis.

The first experimental works will involve either an in-situ thermofluorescence spectroscopy set-up for colloidal solutions available at LPCNO or the development of a thermofluorescence microscopy set-up at CEMES-ONERA.
