Abstract

This proposal, which involves 3 research groups of LPCNO (Nanostructures and Organometallic Chemistry ; Quantum Optoelectronics) and CEMES (In situ interferometry and instrumentation for electron microscopy), aims at synthesizing high-quality cadmium-free nanocrystals (based on InP and Zn 3 P 2 materials) as substitutes to the ubiquitous and toxic CdSe quantum dots. The sought features are (i) narrow emission line widths (<40 nm), (ii) enlarged emission spectral range (>750 nm), (iii) high fluorescence quantum yields (>80%) and (iv) long-term stability at temperatures up to 150°C, to achieve Cd-free QDs relevant for next generation optoelectronic devices and biological labels. The development of our novel synthetic approaches will rely on coupling complementary up-to-date characterization studies from atomic (HRTEM, HAADF, STEM-EELS, STEM-EDS) and molecular scales (MAS NMR) to macroscopic optical properties (PL full width at half maximum, PL quantum yield…) in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the correlations between synthesis/structure/physical properties.
